English Language Arts
Reading is a complex skill comprising several interconnected sub-skills. Development follows a somewhat predictable sequence that begins with pre-language skills in infancy and extends into complex text interpretation and meaning-making skills, which continue to develop through adulthood. The CCSS offers one potential learning progression for Reading. EdInstruments has adopted Common Core’s English Language Arts standards framework by including Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language as domains within this category.
CCSS believes that students who are able to successfully meet the English Language Arts standards should possess the following general abilities as well:
- Demonstrate independence
- Build strong content knowledge
- Respond to varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline
- Comprehend as well as critique
- Value evidence
- Use technology and digital media strategically and capably
- Come to understand other perspectives and cultures
