Instruments

Schooling

Within the library of instruments, EdInstruments catalogues Schooling assessments for users to compare options for use in research and practice. Included in this category are measurement tools representing subcategories: including Teaching and School Climate. The full spectrum of Schooling measurement tools will also include measures of School Culture, Instructional Focus and Leadership instruments.

The Framework

Each of EdInstruments’ four categories contain several “layers” that help to organize the collection of measurement tools housed within each category. The first layer users can explore are the subcategories. An initial period of background research is conducted to understand the landscape of a category, in order to determine which subcategories are essential to include. The next layer within each subcategory are “domains.” Each subcategory has its own respective domains that serve as an additional level of organization within the collection of measurement tools. As users navigate through the instrument list(s), they can narrow and/or expand search parameters using these layers of organization; thus, allowing the personalization of their search for tools based on specified needs.

Within the Schooling category, School Climate and Teaching serve as subcategories, while more granular domains (e.g. culturally responsive teaching within the Teaching subcategory and institutional environments within the School Climate subcategory.)

The Assessing School Settings: Interactions of Students and Teachers observational measure (ASSIST) is a classroom observation instrument that rates social processes occurring in the classroom. The instrument was initially developed to evaluate students' and teachers' behaviors using the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS), however, recent updates have primarily focused on teachers. Teachers' behaviors are rated through event‐based tallies and global ratings. The measure has been used to evaluate the effects of school-wide interventions, and the relationship between teacher and student behaviors.

The Attributions of Mathematical Excellence Scale (AMES) is designed to assess elementary teachers' beliefs about why students excel or struggle in mathematics. Its focus lies specifically on teachers' systems of racialized and gendered attribution beliefs.

AMES consists of four subscales, each representing distinct lay psychological theories that aid individuals in making sense of the behavior of others. These subscales describe the following four attributions of mathematical excellence: genetic (AME-G), social (AME-S), personal (AME-P), and educational (AME-E). The genetic and social subscales characterize mathematical excellence as a fixed trait, while the personal and educational subscales characterize it as malleable.

The EDSCLS national benchmark study questionnaires designed for students, instructional staff, and non-instructional staff/principal cover 3 domains and 13 topics. The ED School Climate Surveys (EDSCLS) are a suite of survey instruments that were developed for schools, districts, and states by NCES. This NCES effort extends activities to measure and support school climate by ED’s Office of Safe and Healthy Students (OSHS). Through the EDSCLS, schools nationwide have access to survey instruments and a survey platform that allows for the collection and reporting of school climate data across stakeholders at the local level. The surveys can be used to produce school-, district-, and state-level scores on various indicators of school climate from the perspectives of students, teachers, non-instructional school staff, principals, and parents/guardians. NCES has also developed psychometric benchmarks to enable meaningful comparisons between student subgroups, and between schools.

Framework for Teaching is a classroom observation instrument that can be used for measuring and evaluating the instructional quality of all teachers (from pre-service to experienced) across K-12. The measure can be flexibly used by classroom teachers for professional learning, school leaders for evaluation, researchers for measurement, and system leaders as a common language for organizing the profession.

It should be noted that the majority of research on the Framework for Teaching focused on general education teachers. Studies exploring FfT with special education teachers (see “Psychometric references” below) suggest that they tend to be rated low on FfT’s instruction domain and that FfT does not reflect core practices known to support students with disabilities.

Multicultural teaching awareness is defined as three dynamic and continuous processes reflecting teachers’ awareness of (a) self and others as cultural beings, (b) their attitudes and biases, and (c) the need to create culturally sensitive learning environments for all students. Multicultural teaching knowledge captures teachers’ knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy and instructional strategies related to diverse populations, major sociohistorical and current sociopolitical realities, and cultural dynamics (e.g., ethnic identity, gender socialization, etc.) that may affect between- and within-group differences. Multicultural teaching skills are defined as teachers’ ability to (a) actively select, develop, implement, and evaluate strategies that facilitate the academic achievement and personal development of all students; (b) select and implement culturally sensitive behavioral management strategies and interventions; and (c) participate in ongoing review and evaluation of school policies, procedures, and practices with regard to cultural responsiveness.
